Check Engine Light Diagnosis
What that amber light actually means for your car, and whether it can wait.
The check engine light comes on when the engine computer sees something outside its expected range, usually related to emissions, ignition, fuel, or sensors. It can mean anything from a loose gas cap to a misfire that is damaging the catalytic converter.
$100 diagnostic
- Reading stored
- Reviewing freeze-frame data from when the code set
- Testing the related sensors
- Checking for common causes like vacuum or evaporative leaks
Common symptoms
- Check engine light is on steadily
- Check engine light is flashing
- Light came on after refueling
- Light comes and goes
- Light is on along with rough running or reduced power
A steady light usually means get it checked soon. A flashing light usually means an active misfire: reduce speed, avoid hard acceleration, and have the car looked at as soon as possible, because unburned fuel can overheat the catalytic converter.
We read the stored codes and freeze-frame data, then test the specific circuit or component involved to confirm the cause. You get a plain-language explanation of what triggered the light and what fixing it would involve.
Every appointment is confirmed with a $100 booking/diagnostic payment when you book. It covers the diagnostic visit, is separate from repair costs and is not credited toward them. Repairs are quoted separately and done only with your approval.
Repair labor is $100 per hour for every kind of repair — engine, transmission, electrical, heating and air conditioning, suspension, brakes and everything else. No higher specialty rate and no minimum labor charge. Labor hours are estimated for your specific vehicle and repair and shown on your written estimate before any work starts; we don’t sell flat-rate job prices.

Questions
How much does it cost to check the light?
Check engine light diagnosis is a diagnostic service, which involves a $100 diagnostic fee. That fee is not credited toward the cost of subsequent repairs. Any repair is quoted separately before work starts.
Can I just clear the code?
Clearing the code turns off the light but does not fix the cause, and the light usually returns. Clearing codes can also reset readiness monitors your car needs for some inspections.
Could it really be my gas cap?
Sometimes. A loose or worn cap can set an evaporative system code. But the same codes can come from cracked hoses or a faulty purge valve, so testing is the way to be sure.
